The Aveyron, Auvergne's crossroads from the south-west and Languedoc-Roussillon, is the perfect place for a family holiday.
Fancy heading for the sunshine without the crowds by the sea? Then choose a holiday in the Aveyron and come and enjoy the wide open spaces of the great outdoors! Here, hiking takes centre stage! The Parc Régional Naturel des Grands Causses will be a huge hit with active visitors and thrill seekers, as will the mountains and lakes of Le Lévézou. Visit the Gorges du Tarn on foot, by bike, or even by canoe. And for people who want to gain some altitude, how about some paragliding or getting a new perspective of the Gorges from the cliffs using its via ferrata!
The Aveyron is home to various religious locations. Don't forget to visit the abbeys of Conques and Sylvanès, Saint-Sauveur monastery and Rodez cathedral during your camping holiday.
This French department has the most villages listed as "loveliest villages in France", and your holiday will be an opportunity to visit these ten listed villages. Among the highlights, stop off at Belcastel, which is on St James's way, and visit its chateau, pay a visit to Brousse-le-Château, a mediaeval village which is full of character, and Conques, with its abbey decorated with magnificent stained glass windows created by French artist Pierre Soulages. Come to Estaing with its keep which dates back to the 12th century, the Knights Templar site of la Couvertoirade and the royal fortress of Najac. And you should also pay a visit to Peyre, a semi-troglodyte village with magnificent views over the viaduct of Millau, to Saint-Côme-d’Olt, where you'll be able to see its twisted spire, to Saint-Eulalie-d’Olt, and to the fortified royal town of Sauveterre-de-Rouerge. So these 10 listed villages really are home to some treasures for you to come and see, or see again!
Finally, the Aveyron is also a place of know-how. You really can't leave the Aveyron without buying a knife from Laguiole, an Aubrac village whose artisanal manufacture of knives has made it famous. And you really shouldn't leave without having tasted the famous aligot and a little Roquefort during a visit to the natural caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon.
