The Aquarium, founded in 1930, was one of the first French establishments where oceanography was discussed. It opened to the public in 1933. Today, visitors can explore the world's ocean depths with more in-depth exhibits revealing the Indo-Pacific region, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf Stream. With one of France’s largest tanks (1500 m³) and a Caribbean lagoon…
You can learn about many amazing marine species, from the small "yellow jack" fish to the impressive scalloped hammerhead shark. As you continue on your way, marvel at the magnificent turtles and head towards the cave dedicated to them, for a face-to-face meeting with Alice, the 100-kg loggerhead turtle whose shell measures 120 cm.
The ocean’s flora is just as important and impressive as its fauna. That's why Biarritz Aquarium has opened a coral exhibition to raise visitors' awareness and tell the story of Indonesian fishermen who protect the coral reef that they rely upon for their livelihood.
If you want to learn more about the ocean floor and experience new sensations that will give you a better understanding of the ocean, visit the Cité de l'Océan museum, just 8 minutes from the Aquarium. Listen, touch, feel and dive into the ocean depths thanks to interactive and immersive 360° experiences, fun devices, 3D animations and surf simulators that will transform your visit into a fascinating odyssey, enhancing your knowledge of the blue planet.
Want to know more about underwater fauna? You’ve come to the right place. Discover all the species that inhabit the Atlantic coast, starting with the Bay of Biscay. As you stroll by the fifty or so tanks, you’ll catch glimpses of octopuses, jellyfish, seahorses, etc. And that's not all! You’ll be amazed by the shark tank (rays, sharks and barracudas). The Aquarium houses 5000 residents and living organisms: prepare to be amazed!
Every day between 10:30 and 17:00, you can watch the seals being fed. The keepers take the opportunity to share interesting facts and anecdotes about these charming residents. Then watch them bask in the sun or swim a few laps in their pool, as you sit comfortably on the Aquarium's panoramic terrace.
If you want to take a break, sit back in a comfortable acoustic chair and enjoy a short film featuring breathtaking images of humpback whales. This unique and intimate experience will take you on an exclusive, immersive journey into the world of these great creatures. To continue your visit, go to the cetacean gallery, where you’ll see skeletons and reconstructed models of the different species. Then, learn about fishing techniques and the history of whaling.
Can’t visit during the day? No problem! The Aquarium closes later during the summer period. You’ll be able to attend a unique night-time visit when the behaviour of the fish changes... a truly magical moment! During the school holidays, daily activities are available for visitors to take part in throughout the day: Dining with Sharks, Meet the Turtles, Hide and Seek in the Mangrove... Fantastic memories for the whole family.
