Created in 1970, the Cévennes National Park has really turned the spotlight on this region and all its riches. It is the only mid-mountain national park in mainland France and it spans the five massifs in the Cévennes: Mont Lozère, the Aigoual, the Cévennes Valleys, the Cévennes Piedmont and the Causses-Gorges.
The Cévennes National Park covers the vast majority of the Cévennes region. The points of interest listed are mainly found within this geographical area. The creation of the National Park was the best way of protecting the region’s environment. While on your camping trip in the Cévennes, make sure to explore all of its gems.
From outdoor activities to caves, historic sites and its most celebrated towns and villages… Get ready for a medley of nature, heritage, cuisine, inspiring villages and stunning landscapes.
Have fun and keep cool at the same time! The Gorges du Tarn area shapes much of the north-western Cévennes. In addition to the fabulous scenery to be found, there are plenty of ways to have fun while exploring. There are several spots in the Gorges where you can indulge in freshwater activities. Bask in the peacefulness of kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or hiking… or opt for something more adventurous like canyoning, rafting, via ferrata or climbing.
You can also go hiking and cycling around the Gorges du Tarn. The trails will take you through a variety of landscapes and landforms that typify the Cévennes.
The Gardon is another river in the Cévennes, located in the southern part of the region. During your stay at the campsite, you may hear several different names: Gardon d'Anduze, Gardon d'Alès, Gardon de Sainte-Croix... these are simply names of different sections or tributaries of the river. They are usually found in significant locations or areas that draw tourists.
The most popular section of the Gardon in the Cévennes is the Gardon d’Anduze. This part of the river flows through the pretty town of Anduze and the surrounding area. Anduze and the nearby villages are among the most beautiful places in the Cévennes. We can recommend a trip to La Bambouseraie en Cévennes, an exotic garden unlike any other in Europe, and the historic centre of Anduze and its famous pottery. Not forgetting the Cévennes steam train, which will take you as far as Saint-Jean-du-Gard. And that’s just a selection of the outings and excursions you won’t want to miss!
Another local feature is the caves and grottos. These prehistoric cavities were formed millions of years before our era. The sights created by erosion and climatic variations are incredible. So, you simply can’t go camping in the Cévennes without taking the time to visit some of them. Among the best known are the Trabuc cave and the Aven d’Orgnac. Their reputation extends far beyond the Cévennes, and even transcends the country’s borders.
