Barèges is a small village situated at an altitude of 1250 m, in the heart of the Pyrénées National Park, which has retained all its charm and authenticity. It is also a well-known spa and winter sports resort, with the largest ski area of the French Pyrénées: the "Domaine de Tourmalet". The village belongs to the administrative district of Luz and stretches along the Gave du Bastan river.

 

Here you’ll find world famous places such as Gavarnie, Le Pic du Midi, Le Tourmalet, Lourdes and Cauterets/Pont d'Espagne. You’ll also find fully preserved natural heritage: lakes with crystal-clear waters, villages that are integrated into a landscape shaped by glaciers and humans, ancestral traditions illustrated by pastoralism, traditional Pyrenean singing and local cuisine…

Situated at the foot of the Col de Tourmalet, known as a key pass in the Tour de France, Barèges is an ideal place for cycling enthusiasts looking to follow in the footsteps of cycling greats. If you stay at one of our Yelloh! Village campsites in the Hautes Pyrénées and you’re into off-roading and thrills, Barèges also has a mountain biking spot. The much sought-after Barèges Bike Park offers a wide range of options. Here, you’ll have the chance to ride on courses for all levels in a magnificent setting.

 

For those more interested in hiking, there are suitable routes that offer the opportunity to discover unique landscapes such as the Néouvielle Nature Reserve. Barèges is also famous for its thermal baths, used as a treatment for the body. Nobody knows when the waters of Barèges were discovered, but tradition states that shepherds were the first users. They had noticed that sick or injured sheep came to bathe in these warm waters.

Given the location at the foot of a mountain pass, when it comes to activities skiing tops the bill! Take advantage of the various ski resorts in the area and get ready to hit the slopes of the largest ski area in the French Pyrénées, with over 100 km of ski routes. If you're planning a more leisurely day out, you can try snowshoeing or sledding with beautiful huskies... There’s something for the whole family to enjoy, as you make fantastic memories!

 

During the summer months, the pretty village of Barèges is just as attractive to visitors with its magnificent views, which you can admire during walks or bike rides. Don't forget your camera! And if you’d like to try a thrilling activity in this extraordinary environment, you can organise fishing, rafting/canyoning or even paragliding trips... Perfect activities to try on holiday.

How about a little bite to eat? Barèges is also known for its AOC lamb and mutton. There are some excellent restaurants where you can sample the local cuisine. Or you can go directly to the market, every Wednesday from June to September.

 

After all those action-packed days, it’s time to relax. Visit the highest spa in France. You’ll benefit from the effects of the sulphurous waters, the natural setting of the mountains and the climate which is particularly beneficial for respiratory ailments. The thermal water of Barèges is a treatment for the body, but it also offers pure relaxation for the mind. The relaxation area consists of a sauna, hammam and whirlpool, giving you the unique opportunity to focus on your well-being... All this under a glass dome that offers a soothing view of the valley. A beautiful end to the day! Good news: children are welcome from the age of 6 months and some areas are open to families.
