The inhabitants of Corcieux are known as the… Forfelets. At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be any logical connection between the name of the town and that given to the people who live there. The exact origin of the name remains unknown, although there are several possible explanations. A couple of legends suggest that “forfelets” is a variation on “feux follets” (which means will-o’-the-wisps). A third possibility lies in the fact that in the past, the inhabitants of Corcieux were granted exemption from inheritance tax by the local nobleman. This would have been expressed in the term “forfait legs”, which evolved over time to become “forfelets”.
Quite clearly, while staying in the pristine landscapes of the Vosges, you’ll want to spend your time in the great outdoors. There are plenty of hiking trails waiting to be explored, especially in the Ballon des Vosges Natural Regional Park. There are also several cycling routes, so you’ll be able to admire the great Vosges lakes, including Lake Gérardmer, as you set off on these trails, whether on foot or on two wheels. You can also travel the Vosges Thermal Spa Route, which will take you to the region’s spa towns: Vittel, Bains-les-Bains, Contrexéville and Plombières.
The Vosges is a land of culture, traditions and history. The historical Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang, the Struthof concentration camp and Le Linge Memorial (First World War museum) are all must-see destinations. In Corcieux, take a tour of the village and its centre, most notably the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption.
Explore the Vosges mountains, which extend beyond the department and into Alsace. In fact, the neighbouring department is just a few minutes from your campsite in Corcieux. Take the opportunity to spend a few days in the emblematic towns and villages of Alsace. The Vosges are also close to the Franco-German border. In less than 2 hours, you can discover an array of German towns, such as Freiburg, Offenburg and Baden-Baden. Not to mention Europa Park – one of the greatest amusement parks in Europe.
Finally, the Vosges is not only a feast for the eyes. It’s also a treat for your tastebuds! Try Vosges salad, Munster géromé cheese, wild blueberry pie, calf’s head and more. Gourmets will be in heaven as they indulge in a range of sweet and savoury delights! And did you know? The local confectionery is a real institution! Take a trip to the Confiserie des Hautes Vosges artisanal sweet factory to see (and taste) for yourself.
