Mâcon is a Burgundian town with a Mediterranean feel to it. And if you need any convincing just take a walk along the banks of the Saône, along the Quai Lamartine close to the Saint-Laurent Bridge with its 12 arches. You will be able to admire the magnificent mediaeval cathedrals of the town and the façades of the houses painted in bright colours before heading to the town centre where you will discover a myriad of historical monuments. In the Ursulines Museum, the Lamartine Museum or the Hôtel Dieu Hospital, you will find any number of exhibitions about the history of the region, the wars in France or about the old apothecary, etc.
And just a few minutes away you will be able to admire the famous Maison de Bois: this house with its sculptures of animals and fantasy creatures that dates back to the Renaissance. One of the great landmarks of the town.
Eco tourism is all the rage here. Right next to the town are the Mâconnais Mountains that are a joy for walkers to discover. Follow in the footsteps of the poet Lamartine, or stop for a break and sample some of the local specialities: Charolais beef, Burgundy snails, Mâconnais cheeses, local wines. The Route des Vins between the Mâconnais and Beaujolais regions passes through here. You will even be able to sample some Gaufrettes Mâconnaises.
Your walk will also take you to the Solutré Rock that is so well known in the region or to the prestigious castles of Brancion, Corcelles, Drée, etc.
