Straddling the river Loire, Saumur has a rich history and is one of the most well-recognised winemaking towns.
It has various locations worth visiting, be these the quirky alternatives like the troglodyte dwellings built out of the rock, or more prestigious ones like the stately château. Saumur is also a hotspot for equestrianism, and is home to the Institut Français du Cheval et de l’Equitation. While here, you should also pay a visit to the gala occasion known as the Cadre Noir, which is dedicated to equestrianism.
During your camping holiday in Saumur, we also suggest you go to the mushroom museum, which is located in a troglodyte cave. Here, you'll discover the fascinating story of just how they grow this unusual crop. For people who enjoy wines, those produced in Saumur are renowned for their finesse, and you'll be able to visit some cellars here, as well as the Combier distillery, the oldest of its kind in the Loire Valley, and taste some regional wines and liqueurs.
Your camping holiday in Saumur will be like a journey through time, with its large château looking proudly out over the town, its fortified walls erected to deal with the attacks associated with the Hundred Years War and all the other religious wars. Its town centre contains half-timbered walls, little squares built using ancient stone, mediaeval cellars and plenty more. This is a major town when it comes to trading in goods, and a camping holiday in Saumur will tell you an awful lot about France's history.
