Located in the triangle between Avignon, Cavaillon and Carpentras, this charming little town is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Time passes at a different rhythm here and life seems calmer, more serene. Leave your car outside the town and walk into the centre – the best way to take in the ambiance, the Provençale fragrances, the colours, the atmosphere.
Wander along the canals and over the little bridges, the little lanes and admire the water wheels before popping into one of the 300 antiques shops in the town or an art gallery for which L’Isle sur la Sorgue is so famous and which draw people from all over the world.
The heritage of L’Isle sur la Sorgue has been magnificently preserved. You won’t know where to start, there is so much choice, from the old silk manufacturing businesses that were driven by the water wheels so beautifully preserved to the magnificent town houses and the Baroque church. There’s no doubt about it; you too will fall completely under the spell of this wonderful ‘island town’.
It would be a pity to leave L’Isle sur la Sorgue without visiting the ‘partage des eaux’ just one kilometre from the town. In fact, the river splits in two creating a large pond in the shade of plane trees. A wonderful spot for a bucolic stroll.
