As soon as you hear the name Pont-Saint-Esprit, one question naturally comes to mind: why such an unusual denomination? Unsurprisingly, the town owes its moniker to its famous bridge. The Pont du Saint-Esprit (or Holy Spirit Bridge) was built in 1265 to connect the town to the opposite bank of the Rhône – the river that separates the departments of Gard and Vaucluse, and thus the regions of Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. According to legend, during the bridge’s construction, 12 workers were toiling away when a mysterious 13th labourer appeared. Displaying extraordinary skill, this figure quickly sparked rumours that he was none other than the Holy Spirit himself, disguised as a construction worker. This remarkable tale inspired the bridge’s name. Years later, the town of Saint-Saturnin-du-Port was renamed Pont-Saint-Esprit.
At Pont-Saint-Esprit you can fill your holiday with a wide range of activities. If history and heritage are your thing, be sure to get up close to admire Saint-Esprit bridge. After that, why not take a stroll through the town centre to discover the gothic Saint-Saturnin church and Saint-Pierre priory? Finally, round off your tour of the Pont-Saint-Esprit’s historic centre with a trip to the Museum of Sacred Art of the Gard, showcasing works from the realm of religion.
Keen to make the most of the beautiful weather? Spend some quality time with the family, walking on the banks of the Rhône up to the confluence with the River Ardèche, which forms an enchanting scene at the Île des Cordonniers.
